Biography: Lamia is a lonely, sarcastic girl. She has had few true friends in her lifetime, not because she is shy -- rather, she is very outgoing once she has had the opportunity to express herself -- but because any person she loves too closely has died. Following her mother's death during Lamia's birth, every best friend she has ever had has been killed within a certain amount of time of their close confidence -- by Lamia's hands. She believes she suffers from a kind of dissociative fugue, and has moments where she she loses stretches of time. The first time this happened was when she was with her best friend at the time, Laila; Lamia awoke beside Laila's mutilated body, covered in blood, the knife clutched to her chest.

Although she lacks close friends, she is spontaneous and enjoys spending time with other people; her circle of acquaintances is huge. She loves going to parties where she is often the focus of attention, despite seeming withdrawn at first glance. Lamia has a great sense of humor and a huge mischievous side, and enjoys playing tricks on people.

She is Schutzen's younger sister by eight years. In their youth, she looked up to him with an adoration bordering on obsession, but he was always distant and cold to her. Lamia believes that he blames her for their mother's death, but has never outright accused her of it; and secretly, she loves him more for being cruel to her, and thus protecting himself from her "curse."

Her real name is actually Beatrix Gottenhardt. She adopted the name "Lamia" after running away from the Gottenhardt household when she reached the age of fourteen, following Laila's death. She became hugely involved in the punk music scene, and chose a new name to distance herself as much as possible from her past while she eked out a living as anonymously as possible. She was never a fan of her birth name, and refuses to answer to it today.The only person with the authority to make reference to her given name is Schutzen, and he simply refers to her as "Bee," as he has since childhood.

If she were a flavor, Lamia would be chai: flavorful and unexpected.

Biography: Naiyaa is a biogenetically-engineered mermaid, the result of a project headed by the Gottenhardt family and funded by the United States Government as some kind of weapon. She is the first successful attempt, but does not possess the personality of a killer; instead she is quiet, thoughtful, and often perceived as haughty. She does not understand sarcasm or irony, and instead interprets things quite literally.

As a failed experiment, she is Schutzen's personal property. She was supposed to be destroyed following the realization that she was not created with the personality of a killer, but he intervened and instead took her to be his own "personal assistant". Naiyaa completes whatever task Schutzen requires of her, be it as mundane as running errands across the city or as depraved as performing sex acts for a group of Schutzen's business associates. She is completely obedient, which drives Lamia mad.

Much to Schutzen's chagrin, Naiyaa has taken to Lamia, despite Lamia's attempts at keeping her away. She seems to sense in Lamia a kindred spirit: lost, lonely, and unwillingly dependent on Schutzen.

If Naiyaa were a candy, she would be salt water taffy: sweet, but hard to swallow at first.

I was born alone. I'll go on living alone. I thought that surely that kind of life was appropriate.

Biography: Schutzen is the owner of a highly successful chain of luxury hotels. He directly oversees the Hotel Clematis, located in Manhattan; the other hotels in the chain are managed by other members of the board of directors. Following his father's death, he assumed the role of CEO for all of the Clematis properties, although he had never expressed an interest in running the family business: his first love was science, and he had focused on biochemistry at university. Knowing that he would inevitably end up in this position later in life, he completed a second degree concurrently, although that was not his passion.
